Crisis and Problems in the 70s
Kent State (Terrorism/ Cold war)
May 4,1970 ~ Kent,Ohio
4 students were killed by the United States National Guard during a war protest. Kent became a historical icon of the antiwar protest movement. These students were unarmed as well. This shooting was also known as May 4 massacre or the Kent State massacre. The guard fired 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds killing the students and wounding nine other students.
~In my opinion I think that the students shouldn't be shot for just protesting. This can relate to some events today. Like Micheal Brown, and Ferguson protest that has later gotten out of hand. Many cops killed innocent lives of innocent protesters. It shows how history can repeat its self. Why did the guard feel like he had the right to shoot? What was his purpose?

The word "watergate" meant more than an office and luxurious complexes in D.C, it also meant that "the third rate burglary." One of the biggest Major political scandal that happened in the United States. Broke into the Decomocratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington D.C. It changed lives of many including president Richard M. Nixon. If It wasn't for Frank Will, the security guard, for stopping this scandal then the scandal would have never been erupted. The 5 charged burglars:
~I think this took a lot of people by surprise and this could have really affected the government in a long run. But what would happen if it wasn't stopped? My granny said she remembered this happening back when she was younger. |
Watergate- June 17, 1972 (Terrorism) |
Nixon Tapes (POLITICS)
February 1971~ July 18, 1973
These tapes were secretly installed in selected rooms of the White House. Audio recordings of cell phone calls and meetings cross the executive offices. The recordings were turned off in July 18,1973. After they became public knowledge it resulted of the Watergate hearings. Donald Sanders discovered the White House tapes.
~I think that if I was Nixon, I would have to keep my eye out on everyone in the white house. That is invading privacy and especially for the president. The president meeting that need to stay in private and if it was something important he could have said it should have bee for open ears. Why would someone want to do this? What was this person trying to catch on tape?

Roe v. Wade (cIVIL RIGHTS)
January 22, 1973
This court case had made a decision for a right to privacy. This court case was on the decision of should abortions be legal or not. Roe & Wade split the case between pro-choice and pro-line. Under the due process clause of the 14th Amendment extended to a woman's decision to have an abortion, but that this right must be balanced against the state's two legitimate interest in regulating abortion: protecting prenatal life and protecting women's health. ~i think many people have different opinions on abortion. I personally that a women should do what is right and choose what she please. I'm okay with abortion however you are talking a life. Why should it be illegal? My granny supported a fund that helped abortion and thought they should be legal. |
OPEC OIL EMBARGO (cOLD WAR)
October 17,1973
Members of the OPEC proclaimed an oil embargo, by the end of the oil embargo (1974) oil has raised from three dollars to about twelve. OPEC decided to cut oil exports to the United States and other countries that provided military aid to Israel in the Yom Kippur War. Exports were reduced 5% every month until Israel evacuated the territories. OPEC was main part was to raise the money for oil. it was founded by Saudi Arabia,Iran,Iraq,Kuwait, and Venezuela. ~This made people go out of business and it would happen to be a struggle .Why did they punish other states and us just from providing aid to the military? Did they have something against them? My great grandma remember this event and saw no gas signs and things related to this event it was horrible. |
Fall of Saigon (cOLD WAR)
April 30,1975
This was the end of the Vietnam war.Reason being North Vietnamese troops captured Saigon, which is why it is called the Fall of Saigon. Later on, the Saigon advanced towards North Vietnamese troops. The Vietnam War killed around 58,000 U.S troops. and 4 million Vietnamese. This picture was showing members of the CIA help evacuate people onto American helicopters. ~I think this got way too out of had from the start. Why did it get so carried away and why did the Vietnam war last so long?I remember my great grandpa told he he remember this picture in the news paper. |
3 MILE ISLAND (Cold war)
March 12, 1979
Near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania was a nuclear generating power plant which later ended up to be the worst history in U.S nuclear history. This was rated level five on the seven point international nuclear event scale. Bad choices lead to the release of radioactive gases into the atmosphere. It wasn't many health affects however it lead to shut down of several plants and public fears. ~I think this really made a big affect on us because this caused a lot of pollution and could have harmed us. Why did they feel the need to do this to the earth? When did they find out it wasn't harmful? I remember my great grandpa said he heard of this on the news. |
Soviet Invaded Afghanistan(Cold war)
December 1979 - February 1989
Troops from the Soviets union invaded Afghanistan. Because they intervened in the support of the Afghanistan communist government in its conflict with Muslim guerrillas during the Afghanistan war. ~ I think that Soviet is trying make sure Afghanistan government is in conflict with guerrillas. Why is Afghanistan trying to support Muslim guerrillas? |
